What to Expect

  • Physical Challenge: Moderate activity with one tough hike (Tiger’s Nest). The trip is demanding mainly due to long drives—4 full days of 5–6.5 hours on winding Himalayan roads. Good stamina and comfort with long travel are needed.

  • Accommodation: Comfortable 3-star hotels in main towns and simpler stays in remote areas like Phobjikha. Bumthang hotels are cozy but have a rustic feel.

  • Food: Full-board meals. Enjoy authentic Bhutanese dishes, including a farmhouse lunch in Bumthang, along with Indian and continental options at hotels.

  • Weather & Travel Conditions: Mountain weather can change quickly. Spring and autumn offer the best conditions. Expect narrow, winding roads as road travel is a major part of the journey. The itinerary runs only in safe and stable seasons.

Arrival in the Kingdom – Welcome to Thimphu

Your epic journey begins with a spectacular flight into Paro. Upon arrival, your Karmaia Adventures guide will welcome you and escort you to the capital, Thimphu. After lunch, we begin our immersion with a visit to the revered Memorial Chorten. We then proceed to the ancient Changangkha Lhakhang for panoramic views and observe the unique national animal, the Takin. The day continues at the monumental Buddha Dordenma statue before we cap the evening at the magnificent Tashichho Dzong.

The Soul of the Capital

Dedicate today to the vibrant culture of Thimphu. We start at the bustling Weekend Farmers Market, a hub of local life. We then delve into Bhutan's living heritage at the Traditional Handmade Paper Mill and the School of Arts and Crafts. The Folk Heritage Museum offers a glimpse into traditional life, while the National Library houses sacred texts. The spiritual highlight is interacting with young monks at Dechenphodrang Monastic School and nuns at Zilukha Nunnery.

Over the Pass to Punakha's Palace

We journey east, ascending to the Dochula Pass (3,200m). Walk among the 108 Druk Wangyel Stupas and, weather permitting, enjoy a breathtaking Himalayan panorama. Descending into the Punakha Valley, we take a gentle hike through rice fields to the famous Chimi Lhakhang. After lunch, we explore the magnificent Punakha Dzong and its dramatic suspension bridge.

Into the Heartland – The Road to Trongsa

Today's drive is a scenic masterpiece. We stop for a short hike to the ancient Rinchengang Village before crossing the Pele La Pass (3,300m), the traditional divide between western and eastern Bhutan. The landscape transforms as we drive through the picturesque Black Mountain range, with optional short hikes to remote villages like Rukubji before arriving in the historic town of Trongsa.

Royal Roots and High Passes to Bumthang

We explore the majestic Trongsa Dzong, the ancestral home of Bhutan's royal family, and its watchtower, the Ta Dzong Museum. Then, we continue our journey, crossing the Yotong La Pass (3,400m) into the sacred Bumthang Valley. En route, we stop in Chumey Valley to witness the art of traditional Yatha wool weaving. The day ends in Jakar, the main town of Bumthang.

The Spiritual Heart of Bhutan

Bumthang is Bhutan's spiritual core. Today, we visit some of its most sacred sites: Jambay Lhakhang, one of the kingdom's oldest temples; Kurjey Lhakhang, a holy complex built around a cave containing the body imprint of Guru Rinpoche; and Tamshing Lhakhang. A highlight is a traditional lunch in a local farmhouse, followed by a visit to the Jakar Dzong.

Expedition to the Remote Tang Valley

Venture off the beaten path to the secluded Tang Valley. We stop first at Mebar Tsho (the Burning Lake), a deeply revered pilgrimage site. Our destination is the remarkable O'Chholing Palace Museum, a family-run heritage home that offers an intimate look into Bhutan's aristocratic past—an experience few travelers enjoy. After lunch with the family, we drive back to Jakar.

The Long, Beautiful Drive to Phobjikha

We retrace our route west, crossing the Pele La Pass once more on our way to the Phobjikha Valley. This long drive is a visual feast, showcasing the diverse landscapes of central Bhutan. Upon arrival in this protected sanctuary—the winter home of the black-necked cranes—you'll be rewarded with profound peace and stunning scenery.

Sanctuary in the Crane Valley

Today is for embracing the tranquility of Phobjikha. The main activity is the beautiful Gangtey Nature Trail (approx. 2.5 hours), a gentle walk that ends at the Gangtey Gompa monastery. You can also visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Center to learn about these majestic birds. The pace is relaxed, allowing you to soak in the serene atmosphere.

Return to the Paro Valley

After a final peaceful morning in Phobjikha, we drive back to Paro. Upon arrival, we step into history at the National Museum, housed in an ancient watchtower. A short walk leads us to the impressive Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong) and its historic wooden bridge. The afternoon is for exploring the charming Old Paro Town.

The Climactic Pilgrimage – Tiger's Nest

Today is dedicated to one of Bhutan's most sacred sites: the Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang). The 2-3 hour hike uphill is a rewarding pilgrimage and a fitting culmination of your journey. After exploring the monastery, we descend. If energy permits, we visit the Kyichu Lhakhang. In the evening, we gather for a special farewell dinner.
