The Heart Behind Karmaia

With every journey you take with Karmaia Adventures, you become part of something much bigger. A portion of Karmaia’s profits supports the education, empowerment, and development of young girls in Nepal.

Introduction

At Karmaia Adventures, we believe that every journey should leave something good behind. Our mission isn’t just about crossing high mountain ridges or trekking through pristine valleys; it’s also about making a positive impact on the lives of people who live in the communities along the paths we travel. This belief inspired our partnership with Avasar Nepal, an initiative founded by our own founder Mingma Sherpa to create educational opportunities for young girls in Nepal’s most remote regions.

The Genesis: Why Avasar Nepal?

Across rural Nepal, young women continue to face profound barriers to education. Many walk long, often unsafe journeys to school, while family poverty can force them into work instead of the classroom. Deeply rooted gender norms often prioritise sons’ education, and many girls are expected to marry young. In some communities, schools lack proper infrastructure, qualified teachers, or even basic facilities. These challenges combine to deny countless capable young women the chance to learn, grow, and contribute to their communities.

The story of Karmaia is intertwined with the story of Avasar Nepal. As founders, we witnessed firsthand the challenges and potential within various communities across Nepal. We realized that “avasar” (opportunity) is the most valuable gift one can give. This belief led to the creation of Avasar Nepal, a registered non-profit organization dedicated to empowering lives and fostering sustainable change.

What is Avasar Nepal?

Avasar Nepal is our heart project. It is a grassroots initiative focused on:

Educational Support: Providing scholarships, school supplies, and learning resources to children from low-income families.

Health & Sanitation: Organizing health camps and promoting awareness about hygiene and preventive healthcare.

Community Empowerment: Initiating skill-building workshops and supporting local entrepreneurs to achieve self-reliance.

Disaster Relief: Providing immediate aid and support during natural calamities.

The Karmaia & Avasar Nepal Synergy

We don’t just write cheques; we roll up our sleeves. As founders of Karmaia:

A Portion of Our Revenue is Directly Allocated: A percentage of every sale/service from Karmaia is channeled directly into funding Avasar Nepal’s projects.

Pro Bono Expertise: Our team volunteers its time and professional skills—be it in putting effort to find a good school for the children that we support or making sure they have a safe travel back home every one a year to their parents in the far west —to help Avasar Nepal operate more effectively and reach a wider audience.

Shared Values: The principles of integrity, empathy, and excellence that guide Karmaia are the same principles that drive our work with Avasar Nepal.

Our Impact Together

18 girls from far west “Bajhang”, supported through educational programs “Ikasi” with the help from Nepaldala, out of which,

  • 5 girls have moved on from our project to their respective families and earning for their family
  • 13 (aged 10 to 16) girls are under our care who are studying and staying in our project.

When you choose Karmaia, you are not just a customer; you are a partner in our mission. Your support enables us to grow our business and, in turn, expand our impact through Avasar Nepal.

How this works?

At the end of the trip, you have a free dinner in our home with the girls, where you get to meet them and see how they live and study. Talk to them, listen to their experience or just sing and dance with some of our talented girls.
